When it’s a searing summer morning in Saint Louis, nothing is worse than recognizing your air conditioner isn’t operating the way it is meant to. The last thing you need to do is call for cooling system service. But your HVAC is a fairly complicated system, so it can be hard to figure out what’s creating the problem on your own.
That’s why Morgner Inc. Air Conditioning & Heating created this guide to help you understand what may be going on with your AC. Below, you’ll see some typical situtations that explain why your house is feeling uncomfortable. And while a couple of these are easy] DIY activities, you may need to call in an expert for HVAC repair.
And if you need us, Morgner Inc. Air Conditioning & Heating is here for you. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your house in Saint Louis.
1. Your Device Settings Could Be Incorrect
Every home sets their thermostat a bit differently to suit their personal needs. However, many homeowners make the mistake of setting their thermostat to “On” as opposed to “Auto.” Because of this setting, the fan in your system will continue to push out air even once you’ve achieved your preferred temperature.
This can seem like your AC is distributing warmish air, when really it’s just using the fan more frequently than necessary. Trying changing this setting and find out if things cool off.
2. Your Cooling System Needs to Be Cleaned
There are two main areas to investigate for dirt or dust accrual when your home comfort system doesn’t appear to be operating well.
First, examine your system’s filter. If you don’t swap out your filter on a regular basis, built-up dust can make it hard for air to move through and lower the temperature your space. If your filter is noticeably dirty or dusty, it’s likely time for a change. (And in general, you should switch it about once every three months at a minimum.)
If your filter is looking fine, go to your external unit. Double check there’s a reasonable amount of clearing around it and clear away plants or debris stuck there. This section of your cooling system lets off the heat from your house. If the coils outside are clogged, you won’t be feeling comfortable in your home.
We advise scheduling professional air conditioner maintenance each year to keep your system operating properly and to keep your warranty valid.
3. Your Unit is Losing Refrigerant
Refrigerant is the substance that cools the air in your space. It runs between your indoor and outdoor system elements to soak up and discharge heat, to help your house stay the right temperature. If there is a leak along the way, you won’t be feeling comfortable again until you schedule professional air conditioning repair.
Signs of a refrigerant leak include a decrease in cooled air, more expensive electric bills, frozen evaporator coils and strange hissing noises coming from your HVAC.
If you think refrigerant could be leaking, call Morgner Inc. Air Conditioning & Heating for HVAC repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be damaging to your family’s health.
4. One or More Elements Should Be Replaced
Your air conditioner is made up of a few crucial pieces. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If any one of these is broken, your home comfort will suffer.
Our Morgner Inc. Air Conditioning & Heating technicians are well-trained and experienced in HVAC. They can help you find and mend any trouble.
5. Your Air Conditioner Has to Be Updated
If your AC is older than 10 years old, it is probably a good time to look into new air conditioner installation. As your system ages, it sadly won’t function as well as it once did. And it might be making your space too warm.
If your air conditioner is on the younger side but still isn’t cooling things off, it might be too small for your home. AC units are not one-size-fits-all. A cooling system that’s not powerful enough absolutely can’t help a space the way a properly sized AC can.
