Five Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Isn't Cooling Your Residence

July 10, 2020

When it’s a warm summer day in St. Louis, nothing feels worse than figuring out your cooling system isn’t operating the way it was built to. The last thing you want to do is request HVAC help. But your AC is an incredibly complicated system, so it can be challenging to determine what’s triggering the problem all alone.

That’s why Morgner Inc. Air Conditioning & Heating wrote this handbook to help you figure out what might be going on with your cooling system. Below, you’ll uncover a couple common explanations for why your place is feeling a little too warm. And even though a few of these are fairly painless DIY projects, you may want to bring in an expert for HVAC repair.

And if need help, Morgner Inc. Air Conditioning & Heating is here for you. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your residence in St. Louis.

1. Your Device Settings May Be Incorrect

Every person sets their thermostat a touch differently to suit their specific requirements. However, a number of households make the misstep of setting their device to “On” rather than “Auto.” Because of this setting, the fan in your air conditioner will continue to blow even once you’ve attained your preferred temperature.

This can feel like your vents are releasing warmish air, when really it’s just employing the fan on a more regular basis than necessary. Change this setting and work out if things change.

2. Your Cooling System Needs to Be Cleaned

There are two central spaces to inspect for dirt or dust collection when your home comfort system doesn’t seem to be performing correctly.

Before anything else, take a look at your system’s filter. If you don’t replace your filter regularly, built-up dust can make it more labor intensive for air to move through and cool your rooms. If your filter is obviously dirty or dusty, it’s more than likely time to replace it. (And as a rule, you have to switch it about once every three months at the very least.)

If your filter seems good, go to your outside unit. Make sure there’s a reasonable amount of room around your air conditioner and clear any plants or litter stuck there. This section of your system discharges the heat from inside your space. If the coils outside are congested, you won’t be comfortable in your home.

We recommend booking professional air conditioner maintenance annually to keep your system working smoothly and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your System is Releasing Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the material that chills the air in your space. It runs between your indoor and outdoor units to grab and let out heat, to help your home remain the right temperature. If there is an opening along that system, you won’t be feeling cool again until you set professional air conditioning repair.

Indicators of a refrigerant leak include a decline in treated air, pricier monthly charges, frozen evaporator coils and strange hissing noises arising from your HVAC.

If you are worried refrigerant could be leaking, call Morgner Inc. Air Conditioning & Heating for air conditioner repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be damaging to your family’s health.

4. One or More Elements Should Be Replaced

Your air conditioner is made up of a couple crucial parts. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If one of these is not working as it should, your home comfort will suffer.

Our Morgner Inc. Air Conditioning & Heating technicians are well-trained and skilled in all areas of HVAC. They can help you diagnose and repair any issue.

5. Your Whole System Has to Be Replaced

If your equipment is more than 10 years old, it might be about time to consider new air conditioner installation. As your system ages, it sadly won’t work as well as it has in the past. And it may be making your house less comfortable.

If your AC is newer but still isn’t cutting it, it could be the wrong size for your home. AC units are made in different sizes. An air conditioner that’s too small just can’t cool a home the way an appropriately sized air conditioner can.
